Remotes And Keypads

Programming a remote is a two-minute job on most openers, and the more important part is clearing the ones you do not recognise.

Short answer

On most openers: press and release the learn button on the motor unit, then press the remote button within the time window. For a keypad, enter a chosen code then press enter while the unit is in learn mode. The important part is clearing all codes when you move in, change a vehicle or lose a remote.

The basic process

Find the learn or program button on the motor unit, usually near the aerial wire and under the light cover.

Press and release it — not hold it, which on most units clears the memory instead.

Press the remote button once within the time window, which is typically around thirty seconds.

The unit light or an indicator confirms it, and the remote should then work.

For a keypad, put the unit in learn mode and then enter your chosen code followed by the enter button on the keypad.

And for an in-vehicle button, the process is different and involves holding the vehicle button while triggering the opener, which the vehicle manual covers.

Clear the memory when you move in

A used house comes with an opener that may still hold codes for remotes the previous owners, their family, a contractor or a dog walker still have. Hold the learn button until the indicator goes out to clear all codes, then reprogram only your own. It takes a minute and it is the single most useful security step in the garage.

The security housekeeping

Clear the memory when you move in, when a remote is lost, or when anybody who had one no longer should.

Rolling code security, which every current opener has, means the code changes with each use and cannot simply be captured and replayed. An older fixed-code unit can be.

Never leave a remote clipped to the visor of a vehicle parked outside, which is the single most common way a garage gets opened by somebody else.

Use a keypad outside and keep the remote in the house, or use the vehicle built-in button.

Change the keypad code periodically, and particularly after any contractor or service visit.

And use the lock-out function on the wall control when away, which disables the remotes entirely.

When it will not program

A dead remote battery, which is the first thing to replace.

An incompatible remote, because not every universal remote works with every opener — check the frequency and the brand compatibility.

The memory already full, which on most openers holds a limited number of devices and silently drops the oldest or refuses the newest.

A failed receiver or logic board on an older unit.

An aerial wire that has been cut, tucked up or broken, which reduces the range to almost nothing — a classic and easily fixed fault.

And interference, which in a dense area or near certain equipment genuinely happens and shows as a remote that works right at the door and not from the street.

Common questions

How do I program a new remote?

Press and release the learn button on the motor unit, then press the remote button within the time window.

What should I do when I move in?

Clear all codes by holding the learn button, then program only your own remotes.

Why has the remote range dropped?

Often the aerial wire has been cut, tucked up or broken.
