Every job, and how urgent it really is
Start from what happened
Each of these points at a different job, and getting it wrong wastes a visit.

A broken spring. Stop using the opener and do not lift it by hand. Garage Door Spring Repair →
The opener runs but the door does not move
Usually a stripped gear, and usually a repair rather than a new opener. Garage Door Opener Repair →
The door closes then immediately reverses
Almost always the safety sensors out of alignment. Often free to fix. Garage Door Opener Repair →
The door is sitting crooked
A cable has snapped or jumped its drum. Stop using it before the tracks bend. Cable Repair and Replacement →
A roller is out of the track
Do not force it back. It is unsupported and something caused it. Off-Track Door Repair →
Stuck open, or the car is shut in
That is the out-of-hours call. Getting it secure comes first. Emergency Garage Door Repair →
It has just got very noisy

Why this is usually a repair
A garage door is the heaviest moving thing in most houses, and almost none of its weight is carried by the opener. It is carried by the springs. That is why a broken spring makes a door that lifted with one hand yesterday feel like it weighs eighty kilos today, and why the opener grinding is a symptom rather than the fault.
Three parts account for most calls: a spring, a cable, or the opener. All three are repairs in the low hundreds. The industry's reflex is to quote a new door, because a new door is a far larger sale, and plenty of people pay for one when a spring would have done. The single most useful question you can ask is what the repair would cost alongside the replacement.
The one thing worth saying twice is the spring itself. A torsion spring holds enough stored energy to kill somebody, and every year people are seriously hurt trying to wind one with a screwdriver. It is the only job across any of these trades where the honest advice is simply do not. Everything else on this list a competent homeowner could at least inspect.
And in London specifically, winter finds the marginal parts. A spring near the end of its cycle life, a dry hinge, a stiff roller and a perished bottom seal will all hold together through October and fail together in January. An autumn tune-up is the cheapest thing on this site and it prevents most of the emergency calls on it.
How it works
Three steps, and you decide at the end of them.
-
1
You call and describe the problem
Tell us what you have noticed and where — the room, the smell, the noise, how long it has been going on. Give us your postal code and we will match you to a licensed company covering your area. There is no form to fill in.
-
2
A local company takes it from there
They discuss the problem with you directly, arrange a time to inspect, and agree the work and the price with you before anything starts. That conversation is between you and them.
-
3
You decide whether to go ahead
You are under no obligation. If the quote or the approach is not what you wanted, you are free to say no and call someone else.
Find your town
What the work involves locally depends on where the ductwork is and how hard the system runs.
