Rollers And Hinges

Rollers and hinges are the cheapest parts on a garage door and replacing them is the single best value job available on an older door.

Short answer

Rollers carry the door in the track and wear out — flat spots, seized bearings, worn stems. Hinges carry the load between sections and crack, particularly the end hinges that also carry the roller. Replacing both on an older door makes it quieter, smoother and takes load off the opener and the springs.

What wears and why

Roller bearings seize, so the roller skids along the track instead of rolling — which is the grinding noise and which wears both the roller and the track.

Flat spots develop on a roller left sitting in one position under load.

Roller stems bend, usually after an impact or where the door has been off the track.

Hinges crack, particularly end hinges, which carry both the section load and the roller.

Hinge fasteners pull out of the section, which is a section repair rather than a hinge one.

And corrosion, which in a London garage with road salt coming in on vehicles is a real factor on the bottom hardware.

Nylon rollers

Sealed nylon rollers run on a sealed bearing, run quietly and need no lubrication, and they last considerably longer than plain steel. On a noisy door they transform it, and on a door used many times a day they pay for themselves in reduced wear on the track, the opener and the springs. Ask for them rather than like-for-like steel.

Signs they need doing

Rumbling or grinding as the door moves.

A roller visibly not turning as the door travels — watch it with the door moving slowly.

Metal dust or shavings in the track or on the floor below it.

A door that binds or catches at the same point every time.

A visible crack in a hinge, or a hinge that has distorted.

And an opener that is working harder than it used to on a door that otherwise seems fine.

The job and the limits

Replacing intermediate rollers and hinges is routine work and is not spring work.

The bottom brackets and the bottom rollers are under spring tension through the cables, and those are not a homeowner item.

The top bracket connects to the opener arm and is a load point.

Replace all the rollers rather than the worst ones, because they are the same age.

Check the track while access is there, because a worn roller frequently means a scored track.

And have the door balanced afterwards, because reducing the friction changes how the spring tension feels.

Common questions

Are nylon rollers worth it?

Yes. Quieter, longer lasting, and they reduce wear on the track, opener and springs.

Can I replace rollers myself?

The intermediate ones, with care. The bottom ones are under spring tension through the cables.

Should I replace all of them?

Yes. They are all the same age.
